On Christmas Day, Charesse left her 5 m/o pit bull mix behind in her apartment to go spend time with her family. While she was gone, Petey (the dog) ingested a long toilet brush. Charesse wasn't aware of this until she noticed Petey wasn't really eating or drinking and he was losing weight rapidly.
Charesse rushed him to the ASPCA's animal hospital where he was sent to radiology. The x-ray revealed a long tubular object lodged throughout the length of his abdomen. He went straight to emergency surgery.
Now recovering, Petey is doing well and eating/drinking properly. He is extremely affectionate and did great throughout the whole process. He is safe.
~Okay... How does a dog end up swallowing something almost as long as it is..? That doesn't really make sense to me. Animals are a mystery lol. Glad he's safe <3

The ASPCA and other dog enthusiasts around the world are thrilled to hear Obama say that the BSL (Breed-Specific Legislation) breed bans are a bad idea. The article on the ASPCA's website states that several agencies agree that BSL does nothing for public safety. Banning certain dog breeds don't stop vicious dogs from attacking, it just keeps the friendly ones out of homes. Often times, pet owners of restricted breeds will "hide" their pets- limiting their outside time and vet visits- therefore, not helping much of anyone. Not only that, identifying a breed just by 'looks' is a hit-or-miss proposition, therefore making things even more confusing; especially with mixed breeds. Also, animal control officers become so busy with enforcing the BSL, that they have no concentration on the other laws that need inforced, such as the leash law, licensing laws, and other regulations. Therefore, BSL has become more of a problem than a solution.

~Personally, I'm glad Obama has stepped up and said something about it. I completely agree with him- BSL is a bad idea. It was a bad idea to begin with! I'll be happier when it's completely done-away with, of course, but it's a start. I am thrilled that something is being done about this unfair treatment towards dogs. Hope you all agree, or at least relate.

'On April 12, the ASPCA arrested a Bronx man for shooting his neighbor’s Maltese, Spike, after the dog wandered into his yard.' Donald Savino, 73, placed signs in his yard that said, "Keep your dog off the grass." When Spike got out and padded into Savino's yard, Savino allegedly shot him with an air rifle from his window. “He was smelling a tree,” Spike’s pet parent, Marco Lopez, told The New York Daily News. “Suddenly, I hear this noise....I hear my dog cry—he was screaming in pain.” Lopez immediately took Spike to the vet, but he was unable to be saved and was then humanely euthanized. According to forensic investigators at  Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, Spike had been shot twice on two separate occasions, each one could have led to fatal injuries. “You have no idea all the pain we went through,” Lopez told The Daily News. “We loved (Spike) so much....It was such a terrible way that he died.” Savino was charged with aggravated animal cruelty, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and possession of an air rifle. The ASPCA is shocked about Spike's story, but regardless, is working feverishly every day to help put a stop to animal cruelty. They are making valient efforts to be sure that the criminals who commit abuse or neglect against animals are given proper consequenses.

~Okay... HOW COULD YOU SHOOT A POOR INNOCENT DOG FOR ACCIDENTALLY TRESPASSING ON YOUR PROPERTY?!?! IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT, THEY CAN'T READ YOUR STUPID "DO NOT TRESPASS SIGNS"!! Shame on that dog for being born without the ability to read human english. Shame on you, sir, for shooting it for something that was absolutely not its fault. That poor family should... I don't know... sue you or something! I mean, seriously! WAKE UP PEOPLE AND REALIZE WHAT THIS WORLD IS COMING TO! THESE ANIMALS ARE LIKE US! WOULD YOU SHOOT SOMEONE FOR BEING INNOCENT?! I THINK NOT! SO WHY WOULD YOU DO IT TO THAT POOR DOG?! THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A WHILE! (Grrr! It just gets me sooo mad!!)

Update: Charges Filed in 3-State Dog Fighting Raid as Dogs Receive Much-Needed Care

In late March, the ASPCA made a raid on a 3-state dog fighting event that resulted in the recovery of over 100 animals. When they found the dogs, many were tethered by heavy chains, forced to tough through a blizzard. When the dogs arrived at the shelter, many required immediate care while others needed on-going treatment. They now benefit from behavioral enrichment programs that involve toys, games, and lots of fun interaction with people. The dogs have access to large playpens where they are free to let out some of the energy they contain. “Every day,” Tim Rickey says, “we’re focusing on taking care of these animals and providing the best environment that we can for them.”

The ASPCA is now working on trying to uncover more evidence and provide support to other law enforcement agencies and working to ensure dog fighters pay for harming these innocent animal victims. 'Last week Pete Davis Jr. and Melvin L. Robinson, both of Kansas City, Kansas, were each charged in federal court with one count of transporting animals for participation in an animal fighting venture in interstate commerce. If convicted, they face up to five years in federal prison and a possible fine of up to $250,000.'

“The case is not over yet—there’s still a lot of work to be done on the investigation side,” says Rickey.

Their next steps are continuing to provide 'top-notch' care for the animals and working to ensure they go to good loving homes. As well as being sure that everyone involved in this crime is brought to justice.

~This is just sad! I don't understand how anyone, no matter how heartless, could pit these dogs against each other. Anyone care to explain?! Seriously! This is ridiculous! It's just like forcing humans to fight each other, or even children. How would we feel about that?! Yeah- everyone would be against that, but when they do it to dogs or birds or any other animal its okay?! NO! I don't think so!! THINK about THAT for a while and tell ME what YOU think about it.

ASPCA Makes Arrest in Case of Starving Puppies in Apartment

After Jerome Smith was evicted from his home, he chose to leave behind his two six-month-old puppies. The New York City Animal Care & Control found the two Terrior mix puppies- Jack and Jill- in Smith's former home in September. They were all alone and in horrid condition. The officers called the ASPCA agents who took them to Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital right away. The vets found that the two puppies were dehydrated, malnourished, and extremely underweight. Jack weighed 12.7 lbs and Jill weighed 8.5 lbs. Once they were given a proper diet and better care, Jack now weighs 36.5 lbs and Jill weighs 30.3 lbs. Smith was arrested in December and was charged with two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. If convicted, he'll do up to 2 years in jail and have to pay a $2,000 fine. On January 13, Jill was adopted! Jack is waiting patiently for a forever home in the ASPCA Adoption Center in Manhattan.

Update: Jack has been adopted!

How could you abondon your SIX- month- old puppies?! They're not even a year old yet! I don't care how urgently you need to leave your home! If you wouldn't leave your kids behind to fend for themselves and starve to death, why would you do it to your pets?! Pets are supposed to be exactly like family! They're supposed to be just like your children, whether you have any or not! I'm sorry, but it just makes me so angry when people don't THINK before they do something! It's absolutely ridiculous and I don't see how it's possible to go on with each day knowing that they're gone and that you have no idea what could have happened to them! GOSH... It just makes me so mad!

More Than 6,000 Establishments Join With the HSUS to end Canada's Seal Slaughter

More than 6,000 restaurants and grocery stores have pledged to protect seals by avoiding buying most Canadian seafood. The HSUS plans to try and convince the Canadian government to end the slaughter of baby seals. With more than 1 million baby seals killed in the last five years alone, this is truely a case of cruelty. The Protect Seals boycott of Canadian seafood was launched in 2005 as an effort to give Canada a chance to change things, they haven't. The fight is on to protect these innocent baby seals.

~This is really sad. I can't believe anyone could be so heartless as to that they'd kill innocent baby seals! The HSUS is doing a great thing for these animals and I hope they find justice. This is definiately cruelty and, personally, I'd make Canada give back a lot of the money they earned during their sales. This is absolutely horrible. I am utterly disgusted in Canada's heartlessness. I really hope that the HSUS can help stop this.

The ASPCA arrested a woman in Queens for allegedly neglecting her German Shepherd, Briana.  Agents found Briana tethered to a tree on August 21. She had been neglected for such a long time that her collar had become embedded in her neck. This was causing an extremely painful wound for Briana. The owner surrendered her and she was taken to ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital immediately. She had various issues to be addressed: her coat was infested with fleas, she was dehydrated and highly underfed, and she also had her neck wound from her collar. She is now being treated and recovering at the hospital. When she's fully recovered, she'll be put up for adoption. The owner was charged with a misdemeanor animal cruelty. If she's convicted she'll possibly be going to jail for up to a year and/or paying a $1,000 fine.

~This is another horrible case of animal neglect and cruelty. She definately got what she deserved for torturing such a sweet and innocent dog.

A couple in New Jersey spotted a little white car at the edge of the park. They heard a yelp and the car door shut. Then, the car left. They realized that a Hound/Pit Bull mix puppy; white with brown spots and approximately five months old; had been thrown from the car. The two called the puppy and it came to them right away. They waited about 20 minutes to see if the car would return, but it didn't. So they took it home. The puppy had to stay over that night, but they both knew that they couldn't keep the sweet puppy forever. The female decided to bring the pup to the ASPCA on her way to work. The dog is now in the Adoption Center and will soon be up for adoption. The ASPCA, of course, named her Sandy.

~ This is so horrible! I can't believe anyone could just throw that poor little puppy out of their car!! Thank goodness for those two kind-hearted people! Without them, the sweet pup would surely have died. This is just one example of how cruel people can be. Thank you to that New Jersey couple for saving Sandy's life!
